Psalm 96:1

Oh, sing to the Lord a new song! Sing to the Lord, all the earth. (N.K.J.V.)

Every week I take part in something called Five Minute Friday. It’s a writing exercise given by Lisa-Jo Baker. She provides a prompt and bloggers write for five minutes free of editing. It is a wonderful way to connect with women in the blogging community. Last Friday, the prompt was the word song. I sat down for my five minutes, which usually turns into ten, and wrote the first words on my heart. However, today something else comes to mind.

From the time I was a small child I’ve been a singer. From joy I worship with the gift I’ve been given. In the year 1997 while battling infertility, I had a doctor’s appointment (one of many) to find out if I was pregnant. The result was negative. I spent most of the day in tears. That same evening, I was to attend a choir rehearsal at church. I had a solo: a big, powerhouse, Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir type solo. I stood on the stage completely prepared. I had the lyrics memorized, the choir behind me, and my microphone in hand. The music began, but I could not make one sound come out of my mouth. I asked the soundman to restart the song. Slowly the melody made its way out of my throat and into the air. I had to work for every word. Joy and sorrow were having a tug of war inside my spirit. Yet, in that moment, Jesus met me where I was. I still felt the pain, but a new song was forming within. Christ Himself was singing a soft melody of mercy to my soul.

All of us have our own giants to face in life. Some are more difficult than others. But do not let any of them steal your song. Let the sweetest melody of praise waft from your lips and allow Christ Himself to minister love and mercy to your brokenness. Sing a new song!

If you had to title the song your heart is singing today, what would it be?
