I’m the vacation Bible school director for my church. We are a small church with big hearts. We usually welcome around 100 children to our program each year. Tonight was our first decorating night. We are transforming our building into Athens Greece. As I walked in the building and to the gymnasium, which some refer to as the sanctuasium since it is where we meet for church service, there were people working feverishly. Meticulously, thought out, handmade decorations line the walls and Bible points and verses are being hung throughout the building. It warms my heart to see us join together as one small church body to welcome many children. Our goal is to plant seeds of Jesus in beautiful little hearts. God is good and we want to share Him.
From our small church we will be shouting out the love of Jesus with thoughtful smiles, hugs, encouraging words, and genuine kindness. We will serve Christ by taking care of His little children.
Mark 9:33-37
Then He came to Capernaum. And when He was in the house He asked them, “What was it you disputed among yourselves on the road?” 34 But they kept silent, for on the road they had disputed among themselves who would be the greatest. 35 And He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, “If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.” 36 Then He took a little child and set him in the midst of them. And when He had taken him in His arms, He said to them, 37 “Whoever receives one of these little children in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me, receives not Me but Him who sent Me.” (N.K.J.V.)
I’m always amazed at what Christ speaks to my heart each year though out the vacation Bible school season. Year after year, volunteers walk into this ministry with the purpose of teaching and instead learn so much. Seeing the natural joy and faith children exhibit in their behaviors are gifts from God. When we serve in this capacity, God has the ability to do a wonderful work in our hearts.
Today’s post is to encourage you to volunteer in some type of ministry. It is a privilege and true blessing to serve.
Are you volunteering at a VBS this summer? What is your role? Have you learned more than you thought possible through working with children?
I’ve definitely learn a lot teaching my own kids and managing my family. I love VBS and it is so good to hear the wonderful things you have going on there. I can’t do VBS though now because my children are on the swim team the same time VBS happens in our Church. I volunteer in the ministry of Catechesis during the school year.
Thanks, Eileen. Swim team sounds fun! My oldest is now 20, and I’ve always loved watching him compete in sports!
I loved VBS. I loved it as a child and as an adult helping. I also taught a Sunday School class of 3rd through 5th graders for a few years. My kids are now 19,17, and 14 so we have moved in activity and volunteering in other areas but I miss it. My sister in law is over VBS at her church next week and she has been getting ready for it the last two weeks and watching her has really made me miss it! (Also, I am 42 and was just not happy when I turned 40, but I have found I do a lot of reflecting and thinking in a way that has really been a blessing. They say 30 is the new 40, so I go with it!)
Hi April. I also loved VBS as a child! I think I have finally got used to being age 40. Until the next wrinkle comes. LOL
Oh how I love serving with VBS …
I would love to see other moms splashed as well. We could use your ideas. Your tips. Your stories. Your photos. Your anything mom.
I compose some notes on Monday. I get the momma schedules. So hop over any day of the week (think link up whenever it works best for you) and join us. Real moms. Sharing our notes. Creating a momma melody.
Splashin’ Momma,
Sarah
